A BETTER BRIEF / 2 MIN READ

Before the finish, understand the space.

Five useful questions before choosing a colour, texture or system.

LIGHT CHANGES THE READINGDaylight crosses a woodgrain finish on a covered terrace. Texture, steps and adjoining walls all belong in the brief.

Start with the life of the space.

A good finish begins with a clear conversation. Before collecting colour references, describe what the space needs to do. Is it somewhere to welcome people, prepare food, walk through, work in or slow down? The answer changes the questions we ask. A beautiful reference is useful; understanding why you like it is even more useful.

01 / What happens here?

Tell us who uses the space and what a normal day looks like. Is it a private room, a busy entrance, an outdoor route or a shared courtyard? Think about movement, furniture, cleaning and the way the space connects to the next one. These details help define the brief.

02 / What is there already?

A wide photograph gives us context. A closer view can show the existing surface, edges and transitions. Let us know whether the work is part of a renovation or a new build. Photos begin the discussion; an on-site assessment may still be needed before a system, scope or quotation can be confirmed.

03 / What does the light do?

Photograph the space in the light you usually experience. Note whether the light is natural, artificial or both. A surface’s colour, sheen and texture are seen in relation to that light. Include adjoining colours and materials in your references so we can talk about the composition as a whole.

04 / What matters most to you?

Perhaps you want a quieter room, a stronger entrance or a custom object that fits an awkward space. Say which qualities matter and which decisions are still open. Approximate measurements, a budget range if you have one, and a preferred project window make the first conversation more useful. They do not need to be perfect.

05 / What needs to happen next?

Agree the next step before treating a visual idea as an approved installation. That might be a conversation, a site visit, a sample discussion or a more detailed scope. Ask how the finish will be maintained and what must be ready before work begins. The aim is a brief that helps everyone understand the same project.

Our enquiry guide brings the essentials together: the kind of work, where the project is, the stage it has reached and what you are imagining. You can review the brief before sending it and attach photographs or plans in your chosen messaging app.
